The Confessional (Religious) Character of the Treaty of Lausanne: a Historical and Legal Analysis Against Contemporary and Decontextualized Interpretations of Section Iii
Section III of the Treaty of Lausanne, entitled "Protection of Minorities", is nowadays the object of attempts to extend its application to Muslim communities such as the Kurds, Arabs and Circassians. In the light of the travaux préparatoires and the structure of the text, this study demonstrates that Section III is strictly religious (confessional) in character and that Muslim minorities were deliberately excluded from its scope.
